Working with Veteran Offenders

Between June and August 2013, the BBC made a short documentary film that focussed upon high reoffending rates in the North-East of England and highlighting the work of Northern Learning Trust - Reaching Out Project and its work with ex-offenders. Reaching Out  works with male ex-offenders who have served sentences of less than twelve months in HMP Durham and who wish to settle/ resettle in the Tyne and Wear area. The project matches these men with volunteer mentors who provide support, advice, information and guidance. Mentors are volunteers  that ex-offenders can trust and talk openly with in the knowledge that they will be treat with respect and dignity and in a none-judgemental manner. The film highlights the work Reaching Out does both inside and outside HMP Durham, specifically in supporting ex-offenders John and Steven and the role played by project co-ordinator Graeme and volunteer mentor Sophie.  The film also looks at some of the wider issues regarding re-offending and the governments Transforming Rehabilitation agenda.
